The problem

Your screen looks wrong. Windows can’t fix it.

On many Intel laptops, the built-in display looks too yellow, too warm, or washed out. You can adjust brightness, but that doesn’t fix the color. Windows has no color temperature slider for your built-in screen. And when a vendor tool does exist — like Intel Graphics Command Center — its settings often reset after a restart.

Color temperature fixes the yellow tint. These six other controls handle everything else — vibrancy, contrast, shadows, highlights, brightness and hue. Each one stacks cleanly with the others.

No admin, no account

Runs at standard user privilege as a single process. Self-contained — no .NET runtime needed. Nothing is transmitted anywhere without you doing it.

Colors go back to normal on the way out

Restore runs on normal exit and on both unhandled-exception paths. If ChromaLayer crashes, your display doesn’t stay stuck mid-change.

Settings are written atomically

Your profile is written to a temporary file and then moved into place, so a power cut mid-save can't leave a half-written settings file behind.

Stops rather than fights

If the watchdog hits five consecutive conflicts it can’t explain, it stops re-applying and tells you — instead of silently fighting another app for control of your screen.

Can I move it to a new laptop?

Yes. Press Release in ChromaLayer on the old machine, then activate on the new one. If the old machine is gone or was wiped first, message us from the in-app Feedback dialog and we'll free the slot.

What if it doesn't help on my panel?

That's what the 14 days are for. Install the trial before you buy — it is fully featured, and it costs nothing to find out.

Does the trial cripple anything?

No. It is the complete app for 14 days. When it ends, colors return to baseline and the buy prompt appears — Restore Baseline keeps working either way.

FAQ

The things worth asking first.

Will ChromaLayer work on my laptop?

It runs on Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit, on a built-in laptop display in SDR. It is built for and works on all GPUs including Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA. HDR displays and multi-monitor setups are not supported.

How much difference you actually see depends on your panel. The 14-day trial is the reliable way to find out on your own machine, and it costs nothing.

Is it safe for my display?

ChromaLayer applies color through the Windows Magnification API — the same mechanism behind Windows' own accessibility color filters. There is no kernel driver, no elevation, and nothing written to your monitor's firmware.

Restore Baseline returns your display to its original state at any time, from the main window, the tray menu, or Ctrl Shift Alt R. Your colors are also restored automatically when the app exits, including after a crash.

What happens when Windows resets my colors?

ChromaLayer watches for it. A watchdog re-reads the live color matrix every 5 seconds and re-applies your profile on any mismatch.

After sign-in, unlock, resume from sleep and display changes it re-applies at checkpoints across the first 25 seconds. That window exists for a specific reason: the Windows desktop compositor resets its magnification pipeline 15 to 25 seconds after a session transition, so a single re-apply at the moment of wake isn't enough.

Is this a subscription?

No. $5.99 once, for version 1.x. There is no recurring charge and no account to create.

How many devices does one license cover?

One at a time. Moving it is self-service: press Release inside ChromaLayer on the old machine, then activate on the new one.

If the licensed machine died or was wiped before you released it, send a message from the in-app Feedback dialog and we'll free the slot manually. Your license data is retained, so you are never permanently locked out.

Why does Windows warn me when I run the installer?

The installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen shows a warning on first download. Choose More info, then Run anyway.

We would rather tell you that here than have you discover it mid-install. It is on the list; a certificate is a real cost against a $5.99 product and it hasn't been bought yet.

Is this a calibration tool?

No, and it's worth being clear about. ChromaLayer measures nothing and produces no ICC profile. It changes how your screen looks to you — that's the whole job.

The temperature control moves channel gains toward a Planckian locus; it does not measure your panel's actual white point, so "6500 K" here is a position on a curve, not a claim about your display.

Does it conflict with Night Light or f.lux?

They adjust the same output, so running them together stacks two color changes and the result gets hard to predict. If you use Night Light or f.lux, you may want to turn them off while using ChromaLayer.

Does it slow my laptop down?

The color transform is applied by the Windows compositor, not by ChromaLayer redrawing your screen. The app itself is a single tray process whose main ongoing work is the 5-second watchdog check.

We haven't published benchmark numbers because we haven't measured them properly, and a made-up figure is worth less than nothing.

How do I get my license key?

Checkout runs through Dodo Payments and the key arrives by email. Enter it in ChromaLayer under License to activate. Downloads and updates come from the public GitHub Releases repository.
