Does Night Light Change Saturation? No — But It Can Still Wreck Your Colors

Night Light only shifts color temperature — it was never built to touch saturation. Here's why people think it does, what it actually breaks, and what to use instead.

You turned on Night Light because your eyes were tired at 11 PM. A few minutes later your screen looks duller too — not just warmer, flatter. So you go looking for a saturation slider inside Night Light’s settings. There isn’t one. What Night Light actually does

Under the hood, Night Light works by having the desktop compositor apply a color transform — effectively a warm-tinted overlay — on top of whatever the display is already outputting. It’s a temperature shift applied at the compositor level, not a change to the underlying color pipeline or the graphics driver’s own settings.

Why people are convinced it changes saturation

Two things make this a reasonable thing to believe even though it isn’t literally true.

First: a warmer image reads as less vivid, even when nothing about saturation moved. Push a display toward amber and reds get punchier while blues and cyans wash out — the human eye interprets that whole-scene warm shift as “duller” or “flatter,” especially against a memory of what the screen looked like a minute earlier. This is a perceptual effect, not a measurable one. If you screenshot the display with Night Light on and pull the file into an image editor, the saturation channel is unchanged. Only temperature moved.

Second — and this is the real issue — on Intel laptops, Night Light can trigger an actual reset of a saturation setting you configured somewhere else. This is a documented, reproducible bug pattern, not a perception issue. 3. Re-apply saturation after the toggle, not before. Since the reset happens when Night Light changes state, the practical workaround is ordering: turn Night Light on or off first, then go set your saturation slider. 4. If you want a color shift with less collateral risk, use Night Light’s strength slider conservatively rather than toggling it repeatedly. Every toggle is a possible reset event; leaving it on a fixed schedule at a moderate strength minimizes how often you’re crossing that boundary compared to manually flicking it on and off through the day.

None of this is a permanent fix — it’s damage control around a Windows/Intel interaction that Microsoft has acknowledged in a support thread but not patched.
