Why Is My Laptop Screen Yellow? Causes and Fixes

A complete guide to figuring out why your laptop display looks yellow, orange, or tinted, and how to fix it.

Opening a laptop and being greeted by an overly yellow or warm display is incredibly common. What you expect to be a crisp, clean white background can often look like an aged, yellowed piece of paper.

If you are wondering, “Why is my laptop screen yellow?”, the answer almost always comes down to software aggressively altering your color temperature — the setting that controls whether white looks warm (yellow/orange) or cool (blue/neutral). Laptops have more places for that setting to hide than a desktop monitor does, because between Windows itself, your GPU vendor’s control panel, and whatever your manufacturer bundled, there are usually three or four separate places a yellow tint can be coming from at once.

Work through these in order — most people find the cause in the first two or three.

1. Windows Night Light (The Most Common Cause)

The primary reason a laptop screen turns yellow is a built-in Windows 10 and 11 feature called Night Light. Designed to reduce blue light and help you sleep, Night Light filters your display’s output, leaving a heavy yellow/orange tint whenever it’s active. How to fix it:

  1. Open the Start menu and type Night light.
  2. Open the Night light settings.
  3. Click the Turn off now button.
  4. While you’re there, check Schedule night light — if it’s set to “Sunset to sunrise” or a custom window, it will silently turn back on later even if you just switched it off, and you’ll be back here tomorrow convinced the fix didn’t work.

Note: Sometimes the setting gets stuck. If it says it’s off but the screen is still yellow, turn it on, drag the Strength slider all the way to 0, and turn it off again. This resets the underlying color profile Windows applies, which the toggle alone doesn’t always do cleanly.

2. Third-Party “Eye Care” Apps

Did you previously install software meant to protect your eyes? If Night Light is off, its schedule is disabled, and you haven’t installed f.lux, the next culprit is usually software pre-installed by your laptop manufacturer. Almost no laptop ships with a clean, unmodified version of Windows — manufacturers bundle their own background utilities that manage hardware features, and the display is one of the most common targets. These run at a level below Windows’ own color settings, so they override Night Light being off just as easily as they override anything you set manually.

Look for apps like:

  • Lenovo Vantage (Eye Care Mode, under Hardware Settings > Audio/Visual)
  • ASUS Armoury Crate or MyASUS (Splendid display profiles, or the Eye Care toggle)
  • Dell CinemaColor or Dell PremierColor
  • HP Command Center (Color Boost / low blue light modes)

Open whichever of these is installed on your machine and disable any blue-light reduction, “reading mode,” or “eye comfort” toggle. If you’re not sure which app your manufacturer bundled, check the Start menu for anything with your laptop brand’s name in it, or search Installed Apps in Windows Settings for “Vantage,” “Armoury Crate,” “CinemaColor,” or “Command Center.”

4. Aggressive Factory Calibration

Sometimes the screen isn’t being altered by an app at all — it was just manufactured to look that way, and no toggle will “fix” it because nothing is actually misconfigured.

Displays have a natural “white point.” Many modern laptops are calibrated at the factory to have a slightly warmer white point (around 5500–6000K instead of the neutral 6500K that most software and web content assumes) specifically to reduce eye strain during close-range use. If you place that laptop next to an external monitor calibrated to a cooler 7000K+, the laptop will look distinctly yellow by comparison — even though neither screen is malfunctioning. 5. You Have an Intel Laptop

If you’ve checked everything above and your screen still feels too warm for your preference, you might be running into a specific limitation of Intel’s graphics drivers. Intel’s own Graphics Command Center documentation covers the available color controls (How to Adjust Color Settings Using the Intel Graphics Command Center) — but on many laptops, a dedicated color temperature slider simply isn’t exposed, leaving you with Brightness, Contrast, Hue and Saturation instead.   • The yellow tint only exists in corners or patches (screen burn or backlight bleed) rather than covering the whole panel evenly.
