The real cause

There are two separate things fighting for control of your display:

  1. Intel Display Power Saving Technology (DPST): This feature dynamically lowers the backlight and alters screen contrast to save battery. It is notorious for making screens look muddy.
  2. The Intel Graphics Command Center: This is Intel’s own app for managing your display. It has a Saturation slider that can fix the dullness. The problem? It is extremely fragile. Whenever Windows wakes from sleep, changes resolution, or receives a driver update, the graphics pipeline resets, and Intel’s app often fails to re-apply your settings.

Why the usual fixes fall short

If you look for solutions online, you’ll see a few standard recommendations. Here is why they usually fail:

  • “Turn off Display Power Savings.” This stops the contrast from shifting dynamically, but it doesn’t actually make the colors vibrant. You still have a flat-looking panel.
  • “Increase Saturation in Intel Graphics Command Center.” This works beautifully—until you reboot, close the lid, or connect an external monitor. The setting just won’t stick, and you’re back to square one.
  • “Use VibranceGUI.” It’s a great tool, but it doesn’t support Intel integrated graphics at all.
  • “Use ColorGoggles.” It was a solid alternative, but it hasn’t worked reliably since 2018.
